Documentation

Hydrogen safety documentation should be made available to all personnel and should cover:

  • roles and responsibilities
  • the availability of hydrogen safety training courses
  • hydrogen safety information (a library of applicable codes and standards, regulations, industry brochures, etc.)
  • results of the most recent hydrogen safety inspections in your facility
  • standard operating procedures for the hydrogen systems in your facility
  • reports on any hydrogen incidents or near-misses in your facility.
  • information pertaining to the technology of the process, including:
    • a block flow diagram or simplified process flow diagram;
    • process chemistry;
    • maximum intended inventory;
    • safe upper and lower limits for such items as temperatures, pressures, flows or compositions; and,
    • an evaluation of the consequences of deviations, including those affecting the safety and health of employees.
  • information pertaining to the equipment in the process including:
    • materials of construction;
    • piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID's);
    • electrical classification;
    • relief system design and design basis;
    • ventilation system design;
    • design codes and standards employed;
    • material and energy balances; and
    • safety systems (e.g. interlocks, detection or suppression systems).

Work documentation (e.g., work orders, baseline drawings) should always reflect the current hydrogen system configuration.
