Work Permit System

The employer should develop and use a work permit system as a safe work practice to control workplace hazards during operations. For example:

  • A general work permit should be issued for any work to be done by an employee or a contractor in or near an area where hydrogen is being stored or used. Such a permit allows the employer to control access to hydrogen facilities.
  • A hot work permit should be issued for hot work operations to be conducted in or near an area where hydrogen is being stored or used. This permit should document that fire prevention and protection requirements in 29 CFR 1910.252(a) have been implemented prior to beginning the hot work. It should also indicate the date(s) authorized for hot work and identify the object on which the hot work is to be performed.
  • A confined space work permit should be issued for work in a confined space that is in or near an area where hydrogen is being stored or used.
