Training
Hydrogen safety training should be provided to all employees who handle hydrogen in their jobs. The better their training, the better their incident response performance will be.
- A mechanism is needed to enable them to communicate their safety concerns to management.
- Regularly scheduled fire drills and safety meetings should be instituted.
- Smoking and open flames should be prohibited within 50 feet of hydrogen systems.
- Personnel who handle liquid or gaseous hydrogen or who design equipment for hydrogen systems should be familiar with its physical, chemical, and hazardous properties.
- They should also be familiar with procedures for handling hydrogen leaks and spills, and with the appropriate actions to be taken in case of fire.
- Training should be provided on the use and care of protective equipment and clothing.
- Everyone working with liquid hydrogen should understand proper first aid procedures in case of exposure.
